Types of careers

Whatever your background, skills and interests, there will be a job or career in Local Government to suit you.

While each council will have a different structure and therefore different opportunities, there are five general departments/areas of work.

Corporate Services

Administration, Customer Service, Asset Management, Accounting and Financial Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing and Communications, Compliance/Governance and Information Technology.

Community, Health and Environmental Services

The broad range of services provided by councils' means that jobs are varied and flexible.

You could be a child care worker, engineer, road safety officer, electrician, fork lift driver, planner, youth officer, public relations officer, apprentice trades person, environmental officer, librarian, lifeguard, records manager, ranger. The list goes on.

The great thing about working in Local Government is that whatever job you do you will be making a difference by working for, and with, communities.
