Environmental leadership
Sustainability is a moving continuum. It is about changing the way we use products and services to reduce the long term impact on living ecosystems and the demands on limited natural resources. Given that virtually all existing processes of production and consumption have some degree of environmental impact, sustainability is essentially a process of continual improvement.
Within this framework, it is vital to identify and promote products and services that lead the way. This may take the form of independent accreditation, recognition within an industry sector as best practice, or a demonstrable point of technical differentiation. This indicator is designed to help identify market leaders (offering environmental benefits) at a given time and within any given sector.
Sustainable Choice supports and promotes independent environmental certification programs and encourages suppliers and customers to utilise these tools to help differentiate products.
Information for suppliers
To select this indicator you must provide information verifying the following:
- The precise nature of any sustainability benefits (additional to any claimed by selecting other indicators).
- Independent environmental certification or accreditation (such as AAA rating, energy star rating, Good Environmental Choice Australia or Forest Stewardship Council etc.).
- Recognised best practice within your sector against comparable products, as demonstrated by industry awards etc, awarded by independent bodies.
Disclaimer:
Sustainable Choice is not an auditing or accreditation body.
When suppliers list products on this database they are required to provide documentation to support and verify sustainability claims related to their product(s). To be accepted for listing each product must be able to demonstrate at least one of the nominated sustainability indicators.
Evidence provided by suppliers is assessed and held by Sustainable Choice and Sustainable Choice maintains the right to deny listing to, or remove any product(s) from the database for any reason at any time.
While all effort has been made to verify claims made by suppliers, ultimately the credibility of information provided rests with the supplier and councils are encouraged to make their own investigations.
It is the responsibility of suppliers to ensure product information is current. Out of date or misleading information may result in all products or services from that company being removed from the database.
Finally, it should be noted that as technology and processes improve over time, the goal posts of sustainability shift. A given product may offer sustainability benefits today, yet be obsolete tomorrow. If you think any product or service listed on this database no longer offers genuine sustainability benefits, please let us know.
