Hornsby Shire Council: Business Energy Savings Program - Helping businesses in a carbon constrained future

Hornsby Council has a strong history of leading its community by example to progress sustainability. As part of this commitment Council established the Business Energy Savings Program to reduce business generated greenhouse gas emissions across the Shire. The Business Energy Savings Program is the first of its kind to be undertaken by local government in NSW and forms a unique public/private partnership. The Program is considered to be leading edge and innovative, and to date has been very successful in the local business community. A key component of the Program is the level 2 energy audit and installation of energy conservation measures within private businesses. Council has partnered with Global Sustainability Initiatives (GSI) to roll out this program and GSI provide a 'one stop shop' for businesses by providing a personalised energy audit and a technology refit service. The program is on track to deliver a forecasted $1.4m contribution of investment into the local economy and 3,000 tonnes CO2e in the 1st year alone.

Randwick City Council: Retrofitting Randwick's Des Renford Aquatic Centre for Water and Energy Savings

Randwick City Council's Des Renford Aquatic Centre, with 2 indoor and 3 outdoor pools attracts more than 660,000 visits each year from across the Eastern suburbs and inner west. Over 2 years ago Council commenced a major energy and water implementation project which in 2008 has culminated in the completion of one of the largest backwash and borewater re-use and recycling systems in a swimming complex in Australia. The progress to date has achieved major savings through the installation of solar heating for indoor pools, solar blankets for indoor and outdoor pools, solar hotwater for showers and rainwater for toilet flushing. Now, however, Council has constructed a 240,000 litre storage and treatment system which goes beyond current best practice and will save approximately 15 million litres of potable water each year, providing almost 90 percent of the Aquatic Centre's annual water requirements.
